Official Beer of the Apocalypse

Let the 2012 end of the world ads begin. Chevy started the trend with their Super Bowl spot depicting a group of buddies who are missing their friend Dave. His Ford didn’t hold up to the apocalypse. Shock Top is the latest brand that aims to capitalize on the end of the Mayan calendar. If they had it their way people would be reaching for a cold Shock Top as everything collapses. Although I enjoy the brew and their smooth talking spokesman, if the world is ending I can think of several other beers I would rather drink. Not to knock Shock Top, but it’s just not the last-beer-ever good. I wonder which brands are going to step up next to be “The Official (insert random product here) of the Apocalypse.”

Big Friday Surf 1/6/12
Although the NW swell that hit Southern California this past Friday wasn’t as huge as some forecasts predicted, the surf was still heavy. I took this shot of the Oceanside pier from my balcony around 10 AM on Friday. The waves in Oceanside were walled and topping out at about 9-10 feet so I opted to surf at Terramar in Carlsbad. In Carlsbad the set waves were a more manageable 7-8 feet and peeling perfectly right at the point I was sitting at. There was definitely a good crowd in the lineup, but there were plenty of waves to go around. A seal even decided to join in and take advantage of the excellent waves. Overall it was a great day of surf, made better only by the perfect weather!
Here are some videos of the bigger waves further south:

Torey Pudwill’s Big Bang

Is Torey Pudwill the skater of the year? Check out his video part to see him absolutely kill it on a skateboard. Speed, pop, and technicality are the best words to describe Torey Pudwill’s Big Bang.

NASA Satellite Image of San Diego Blackout
If you didn’t already know, there was a massive power outage on September 8th in San Diego. It affected 1.4 million San Diegans for 15 hours. This NASA satellite image depicts the pure darkness that occurred as a result of the blackout.

Glowing Waves

I took this video of the waves lighting up with bioluminescent algae last night in Oceanside, California. The phenomenon occurs when there is a high concentration of marine dinoflagellates (a type of algae) near the shore. The algae glows when it is disturbed by the waves.

Pacific Coast Road Trip Timelapse

I went on a trip to California with my dad from June 22nd to July 4th. I shot a time lapse of our road trip  from San Diego to San Francisco. We started our trip two miles from the Mexican border on I-5 and made stops in San Clemente, Los Angeles, and San Luis Obispo before arriving in San Francisco. The video was shot with a GoPro Hero HD taking pictures every two seconds.

Leszek Kuzaj Rally Racing a Subaru Impreza WRC

This is a crazy on board video of the Polish rally racer Leszek Kuzaj. He drives faster than his co-driver can read the pace notes, has several close calls, and dodges a stray dog at 4:28. Oh and I forgot to mention the microphone system cuts out two minutes in forcing the co-driver to yell the notes haha. This video perfectly illustrates the skill, confidence, and insanity needed to rally race.

CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarterfinals

I went to the US v. Jamaica and El Salvador v. Panama Gold Cup games and took video of El Salvador’s 78th minute penalty kick goal. The US won 2-0, but the second game was much more entertaining. The crowd had to have been 95% El Salvador fans and put the US fans to shame. The El Salvadorians were at least twice as loud and definitely twice as rowdy. The second game went into extra time and penalty kicks after Panama scored the game tying goal in the 90th minute. Panama won 5-3 in penalties and will play the US in the semifinals.

Mercedes SLS AMG Sighting

I spotted this Mercedes SLS AMG a few weeks ago near my neighborhood. I had to stop and snap a few pictures. This car retails for $183,000 and has been featured on BBC’s Top Gear several times. It has one of the most powerful naturally aspirated engines in a production vehicle, and has a top speed that is electronically limited at 197 mph. I just wish I could see this thing driving around.

McAfee Knob Hike

I hiked up to McAfee Knob yesterday with Laura. Before we could even set off on our hike though, David Tate from ABC 13 interviewed us in the parking lot where the Appalachian Trail crosses Route 311. David was doing a story on the Department of Agriculture’s warning to people using the National Forest System to watch out for marijuana grows. We didn’t make the story but you can watch the news clip here http://bit.ly/leyulX on ABC 13’s website. The hike took about two hours to get to McAfee Knob, which is one of the most photographed spots on the Appalachian Trail. At the top we met some hippies named Rainbow and Firestarter who were hiking the entire trail to Maine. It was a great hike with perfect weather, but we definitely should have brought some water because we were struggling towards the end of the day.
